Learn how to install the Fenix AER-05 tactical remote switch on your rail-mounted flashlight. Step-by-step guide with tips for a secure, reliable setup.

Quick answer

Mount the Fenix AER-05 remote switch on your rail using the included hook-and-loop backer or cable ties, then connect it to your flashlight's tailcap port.

Why use a remote switch?

A remote switch lets you activate your flashlight without moving your hand from the grip. The AER-05 gives you two activation modes: a pressure pad for momentary strobe and a tactical switch for momentary or constant-on high brightness. This is especially useful on long guns or when you need instant access to light without fumbling.

What you need

The AER-05 comes with cable ties and a hook-and-loop backer. You'll also need a rail-mounted flashlight with a compatible tailcap port (most Fenix tactical lights). No tools are required.

Installation steps

  1. Choose your mounting method: Decide between the hook-and-loop backer (for Picatinny rails or flat surfaces) or cable ties (for round rails or irregular shapes). The backer is quicker to reposition; cable ties are more permanent. Test the placement before tightening cable ties — repositioning is difficult after.
  2. Attach the switch to your rail: Peel the backing from the hook-and-loop pad and press it onto the switch, then press the switch onto the rail. If using cable ties, feed them through the slots on the switch body and around the rail, then pull tight. Make sure the switch sits flat against the rail — an uneven mount can cause accidental activation.
  3. Connect the cable to your flashlight: Plug the AER-05 connector into the tailcap port of your flashlight. Ensure it clicks fully into place. A loose connection may cause intermittent operation or no response. Do not force the connector — align it with the port orientation before pressing.
  4. Test the switch functions: Press the pressure pad to activate momentary strobe. Press the tactical switch for momentary-on high brightness; press again for constant-on. Verify both modes work before relying on the setup. If strobe doesn't activate, check that the switch is fully seated in the tailcap port.
  5. Secure excess cable: Use the included cable ties or a small Velcro strap to bundle any extra cable length along the rail or handguard. This prevents snagging and keeps the cable out of the way. Leave a small loop near the connector to avoid strain on the port.
