Quick answer
Both the Fenix HM55R and HM55R RENEGADE deliver 1200 lumens and a 574ft beam, but the RENEGADE is the exclusive U.S. version with a triple-LED design for serious adventurers. Choose the standard HM55R for a versatile, budget-friendly option; pick the RENEGADE if you want the latest triple-output system.
What sets the RENEGADE apart
The HM55R RENEGADE is the exclusive U.S. version of Fenix's best-overall triple-LED headlamp. Its triple-output system uses three LEDs to balance flood and throw, making it ideal for trail running, climbing, or any activity where you need both wide peripheral vision and a focused hotspot.
The standard HM55R is a dependable all-rounder that handles camping, jobsite work, and night fishing with equal ease. It shares the same 1200-lumen maximum and 574ft beam distance, so raw brightness isn't the deciding factor—it's how the light is shaped and which modes you'll actually use.
Weight and comfort trade-off
At just 3.7 ounces, the RENEGADE is very light for a 1200-lumen headlamp, which is a big plus for long hikes or runs. The standard HM55R is also compact and easy to wear, but the RENEGADE's triple-LED design may affect the headband feel slightly—though both are designed to minimize bounce.
If you're counting every gram on a multi-day trek, the RENEGADE's low weight is a genuine advantage. For shorter trips or work use, the standard HM55R's balance of features and price may be more practical.
Which headlamp should you choose?
- Choose the RENEGADE if: You're a serious adventurer—trail runner, climber, or hiker—who wants the latest triple-LED system for a wide, even beam with a focused hotspot, and you value a very light 3.7-ounce design. The RENEGADE's triple-output system is a genuine upgrade if you need both flood and throw.
- Choose the standard HM55R if: You want a versatile, budget-friendly headlamp for camping, jobsite work, or night fishing, and you're happy with a single-LED design that still delivers 1200 lumens and nine modes. The standard HM55R offers the same brightness at a lower price, making it a smart value pick.
- Consider your battery and modes: Both headlamps are rechargeable, but the standard HM55R's 1600mAh battery with nine modes gives you more flexibility to fine-tune output and runtime. The RENEGADE's triple-LED system may have different mode options, so check the specs to see which suits your tasks. Match the mode selection to your typical activities—more modes aren't always better if you don't need them.
