When you're out on a camping trip or preparing for an unexpected power outage, a reliable light source is non-negotiable. The Fenix CL22R rechargeable lantern has been making waves as a compact yet powerful solution for both outdoor enthusiasts and emergency preppers. In this review, we'll dive deep into its features, performance, and how it stacks up against the competition.

Fenix is a brand known for high-quality illumination tools, and the CL22R continues that legacy. It's designed to be your go-to lantern when space is at a premium but you still need dependable brightness. Whether you're reading in a tent, cooking at a campsite, or keeping your home lit during a blackout, this lantern aims to deliver.

Key Features of the Fenix CL22R

The Fenix CL22R is packed with features that make it stand out in the crowded lantern market. First and foremost, it's rechargeable, which means you can say goodbye to constantly buying disposable batteries. It uses a built-in 2600mAh lithium-ion battery that can be charged via USB, making it convenient to top up from a power bank, laptop, or car charger.

One of the most impressive aspects of the CL22R is its multiple lighting modes. It offers a warm white light for cozy ambiance and a cool white light for task-oriented illumination. Additionally, it has a red light mode that is perfect for preserving night vision and not attracting bugs. The lantern also features a dimming function, allowing you to adjust the brightness to suit your needs and conserve battery life.

Another standout feature is its versatility in power sources. While the built-in battery is convenient, the CL22R also has a battery compartment that can take AAA batteries as a backup. This is a lifesaver in emergency situations where you might not have access to a power source for charging.

• Rechargeable 2600mAh battery with USB charging
• Multiple light modes: warm white, cool white, red light
• Adjustable dimming for brightness control
• Backup AAA battery capability
• Compact and lightweight design

Performance and Battery Life

When it comes to performance, the Fenix CL22R delivers impressive output for its size. On the highest setting, it can produce up to 400 lumens, which is more than enough to illuminate a small tent or a room. The beam is even and diffused, providing a pleasant glow without harsh hotspots.

Battery life is a critical factor for any lantern, and the CL22R does not disappoint. On the lowest setting, it can run for up to 100 hours, making it ideal for extended camping trips or prolonged emergencies. Even on the highest setting, you can expect around 8 hours of runtime, which is quite respectable. The built-in battery indicator lets you know when it's time to recharge, so you're never caught off guard.

In our testing, we found that the CL22R's runtime claims were accurate. We also appreciated the fact that it can be used while charging, so you can set it up near a power source and never lose light. The red light mode is particularly useful for nighttime navigation without disturbing others or ruining your night vision.

Design and Portability

The Fenix CL22R is designed with portability in mind. It weighs just 4.2 ounces (about 119 grams) and is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. This makes it a perfect companion for backpackers, campers, and anyone who needs a reliable light source without carrying bulky equipment.

The lantern features a sturdy metal body with a rubberized base that provides a stable grip. It also has a built-in hook at the top, allowing you to hang it from a tent ceiling, tree branch, or any other anchor point. This hands-free operation is a huge plus when you need light while cooking or setting up camp.

Another thoughtful design element is the magnetic tail cap. This allows you to attach the lantern to any metal surface, such as a car hood or a metal pole, giving you even more placement options. The IP66 rating means it's dust-tight and can withstand powerful water jets, so it's ready for rain or splashes.

Comparing the CL22R with Other Fenix Lighting Options

While the CL22R is a fantastic lantern, it's worth considering how it fits into the broader Fenix lineup. For instance, if you're looking for a headlamp for hands-free illumination, the Fenix HM65R Rechargeable Headlamp is a top choice. It offers a robust output and a comfortable fit, making it ideal for hiking or working in the dark.

On the other hand, if you need a more powerful flashlight for tactical or outdoor use, the Fenix TK22 UE Tactical Flashlight is a versatile option. It provides a focused beam with multiple brightness levels, perfect for search or self-defense scenarios. Each product serves a different purpose, so your choice depends on your specific needs.

For those who prefer a more compact everyday carry flashlight, the Fenix E12 V2.0 AA Flashlight is a reliable and affordable choice. It runs on a single AA battery and is incredibly easy to use. However, if you're specifically in the market for a lantern, the CL22R is hard to beat in terms of versatility and portability.

Is the Fenix CL22R Worth It?

In conclusion, the Fenix CL22R is a well-rounded rechargeable lantern that excels in both camping and emergency scenarios. Its compact size, multiple lighting modes, and long battery life make it a valuable addition to any gear collection. The backup battery option adds peace of mind, ensuring you're never left in the dark.

While it may not be the brightest lantern on the market, its versatility and portability more than make up for it. Whether you're a seasoned camper or someone who wants to be prepared for emergencies, the CL22R offers excellent value for its price.

If you're considering other Fenix products, remember that the brand is known for its durability and performance. The CL22R is no exception, and it's backed by Fenix's reputation for quality.
